Sithuthukile Mkhize will represent CALS at a Litigation Learning Lab taking place in Brazil from 20 – 23 October
CALS is proud to partner on a Litigation Learning Lab with Conectas Direitos Humanos, the Open Society Justice Initiative, Forum Asia and the Pan-African Lawyers Union. The event takes place from 20 – 23 October in São Paulo, Brazil and aims to strengthen a community of litigators, promote the exchange of ideas, and generate opportunities for transnational collaboration.
The central themes of the meeting are democracy and racial justice. Some of the sub-themes include climate justice, technology, and corporate responsibility; strategic litigation infrastructure; barriers to transnational litigation; fatigue of regional systems and enforcement challenges; and the shrinking power of the human rights frame. Discussions will take the form of panels, interactive workshops, brainstorming sessions, working groups and informal exchanges.
Sithuthukile Mkhize is set to represent CALS at the event. In addition to engaging in all the sessions, she will be presenting at a panel discussion entitled “Strategies to prevent and counter SLAPP Suits”. She will be sharing her work on SLAPP suits, including the development of our anti-SLAPP model law, awareness raising workshops we have been running with human rights defenders, an anti-SLAPP toolkit and fact sheet we have worked on with our partners, and the litigation that we have taken on defending activists from SLAPP suits.
