A milestone for employee and family

- Wits University

Former call centre agent Oliver Niewenhuys has achieved a family dream by completing a BA in Organisational Psychology and Management, with distinction.

Oliver Niewenhuys, a Wits employee and a former call centre agent passed his studies with distinction (cum laude)

The youngest of four brothers received his degree awarded during the 2025 autumn graduation season.

This academic journey was a personal mission – a gift to self and future generations.

“I am from Reiger Park, Boksburg, and come from a close-knit family. Our journey has been shaped by both challenges and resilience. After losing my father to cancer, my mother took on the immense responsibility of raising us on her own. Despite financial constraints, she instilled in us the values of perseverance and determination,” he says.

It is this background that saw all four complete matric and strive for independence.

“Further education was not an immediate option for my siblings and I, due to financial limitations,” he adds.

Joy was palpable on his graduation day, flanked by his family and partner, Bonnita, whom he describes as his never-ending source of encouragement.

Starting out as a call centre agent, Niewenhuys joined Wits in July 2015 at the Student Call Centre under the Student Enrolment Centre. Six years later he transitioned to the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management as a Faculty Administrative Officer, and recently took up a position as a Postgraduate Faculty Officer.

Doing what it takes to succeed

My career at Wits has been both significant and rewarding. Over the years, I have experienced remarkable professional growth and development, gaining valuable skills and expertise that have contributed to my success. The support and opportunities at Wits have played a pivotal role in shaping my career, and I look forward to continuing my journey here, making meaningful contributions to the institution’s success,” says the father of two boys.

Fully covered by the staff bursary, Niewenhuys embarked on his studies in 2021 majoring in Organisational Psychology and Management. His majors were “driven by a deep interest in understanding human behaviour in the workplace and the dynamics of effective leadership.”

“I have always been fascinated by how psychology intersects with business - how motivation, team dynamics, and organisational culture influence productivity and success.”

This new qualification has also enhanced his thinking and adds value to his current role where he plays a key role in supporting postgraduate students. His responsibilities encompass the full student lifecycle.

This is a role he embraces wholeheartedly adding: “By providing guidance, administrative support, and assistance at every stage, I help students navigate their academic path with confidence. In turn, this contributes to Wits' commitment to academic excellence, student success, and maintaining its reputation as a leading institution in higher education,” he adds.

He invites others to conquer the edge now that he has walked the path.

“To anyone considering furthering their education while juggling multiple responsibilities, I encourage you to take the leap. The journey may be demanding, but the rewards - both

personal and professional - are immeasurable. This dual perspective (student and employees) has reinforced my belief in the power of determination and the importance of continuous education,” he concludes.
