Translation or Interpreting

The BA Honours degree in the fields of Translation or Interpreting strives for a balance between professional and practical training and achieving an understanding of the broader theoretical and conceptual issues.

Overview


The BA Honours and the Postgraduate Diploma are at the same NQF level – the difference between them lies in the entry requirements.

The programme (either in the field of translation or interpreting) is a one-year full-time, or two-year part-time programme.

Curriculum


The BA Honours in the field of Translation consists of the following modules:

  • TRAN4022A: Principles and Practice of Translation and Interpreting
  • TRAN4023A: Specialist Translation with Interpreting I
  • TRAN4024A: Specialist Translation with Interpreting II
  • TRAN4026A: Honours Research Essay
  • TRAN4027A: Selected Topic in Translation Studies
  • TRAN4033A: Translation Studies

The BA Honours in the field of Interpreting consists of the following modules:

  • TRAN4030A: Conference Interpreting Skills
  • TRAN4026A: Translation Research
  • TRAN4028A: Principles and Practice of  Interpreting
  • TRAN4029A: Specialist Translation for Interpreters
  • TRAN4031A: Interpreting Studies
  • TRAN4032A: Selected Topic in Translation Studies

Entry Requirements


A Bachelor’s or equivalent degree in a neighbouring discipline with a 65% aggregate pass mark. 

Applicants for both the translation and the interpreting track are required to complete a pre-assessment in the relevant language combination, as well as submit a letter of motivation (750 - 1,000 words in English) on the reasons for applying to our department. There may be a further interview for applicants who perform satisfactorily.

University Application Process


  • Applications are handled centrally by the Student Enrolment Centre (SEnC). Once your application is complete in terms of requested documentation, your application will be referred to the relevant School for assessment. Click here to see an overview of the Wits applications process.   • Please apply online. Upload your supporting documents at the time of application, or via the Self Service Portal.
  • Applicants can monitor the progress of their applications via the Self Service Portal.
  • Selections for programmes that have a limited intake but attract a large number of applications may only finalise the application at the end of the application cycle.
