Why study Spanish?

There is great potential for Spanish speakers in Africa especially in the fields of tourism and hospitality, international relations, journalism, translation and interpreting and teaching.


Why study Spanish at Wits?

The University of the Witwatersrand has established collaborations with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and with the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). These collaborations seek to promote the teaching of Spanish language and the culture of Spanish speaking countries as well as facilitate academic exchanges for staff and students. The academic programs have been recently developed taking into account the current Curriculum transformation taking place across the university.

Curriculum


For the Honours of Spanish and Latin American Studies, students are required to take four modules and develop a Research Essay on a topic of their choice, approved by the Head of Department or Supervisor.

Modules:

MDLL 4085 Research Methods
MDLL 4086 Introduction to Teaching Foreign languages
MDLL 4088 Spanish and Latin-American Literature
MDLL 4089 Selected topic in Spanish and Latin-American Studies
MDLL4087 Research Essay in Spanish and Latin-American Studies

Entry Requirements


The Honours in the field of Spanish and Latin American Studies is a one-year full-time or two-year part-time degree. The entry requirements (in addition to Faculty requirements for admission to Honours) are:

  • BA degree with a major in Spanish and Latin American Studies or equivalent.

  • Applicants can monitor the progress of their applications via the Self Service Portal.
  • Selections for programmes that have a limited intake but attract a large number of applications may only finalise the application at the end of the application cycle.
