Media Studies

Develop your understanding and appreciation of various forms of media.

Overview


The Bachelor of Arts with Honours in the field of Media Studies is an intensive 1 year full-time or 2-year part-time degree. Students take four semester-long courses that encompass a wide range of subjects within Media and Cultural Studies. Core courses are Critical Media Analysis and Africa Media Systems while electives include Media and Gender, Global Cinema and Society, Media and Politics and Media Economics. Honours students undertake a year-long independent research project of at least 10,000 words under the personal supervision of an academic within the department.

 

Entry Requirements


 

  • An average of 65% for the third year is a minimum requirement for consideration for the programme (but those with averages closer to 70% or above will be prioritised). 
  • If you have a 65% average for the first part of the academic year, we encourage you to apply. If your grades are currently at or above the required average, you should receive a provisional offer. The provisional offers will be made firm once final grades are in at the end of the year.

  • Applications are handled centrally by the Student Enrolment Centre (SEnC). Once your application is complete in terms of requested documentation, your application will be referred to the relevant School for assessment. Click here to see an overview of the Wits applications process.   • Please apply online. Upload your supporting documents at the time of application, or via the Self Service Portal.
  • Applicants can monitor the progress of their applications via the Self Service Portal.
  • Selections for programmes that have a limited intake but attract a large number of applications may only finalise the application at the end of the application cycle.
